Congratulations, Carol Beth!

CB-bio-newIt is my great privilege to announce that I have asked our current Chief Operating Officer, Carol Beth Buchanan (affectionately known as CB to most of us) to succeed me as President of The Main Street Group and she has accepted this new position. I am surely not leaving, but it is time for me to change my role. For almost 40 years, I have worn all the hats; when you are the owner of a small business you must wear many hats and work many long hours.

Now, we are a large business and I find that in working with our clients, solving problems and developing new strategies for the growth and preservation of wealth, I have come full circle to how this all began.

Investment options, rates of return, and the bottom line are all measuring tools of the success or failure of a portfolio. But life is more than a portfolio. “Life planning” measures how the portfolio can help someone achieve what they want and be happy in the process. After almost 40 years in this business, I know life planning and I now have the luxury of just helping people be happy.

carol-beth-casualCarol Beth became a client about 22 years ago when she left Ukrop’s as their marketing director. She was 9 and ½ months pregnant with her daughter, Maggie. Last week, Maggie came home for Thanksgiving from Christopher Newport University, where she is majoring in psychology, with an eye toward working for the FBI one day. Her dad and I had the pleasure of showing her and her brother Matt, also a student at Christopher Newport University, how to shoot some serious handguns at Colonial Shooting Academy. That’s how long the circle has been unbroken.

I say all of this because CB has been a client for over 22 years, but more importantly, a friend, a confidant and a partner in The Main Street Group development. The company would not have the positive spirit it has without her. Please welcome her in her new role and trust her judgment and her leadership, because I do.

The jury is still out on whether my title should be Chief Executive Officer or Old Cheerleader. Either way, I get to try and make our clients happy and that’s going to be fun!
